Farcaster is a decentralized social protocol built on Ethereum Layer 2 (Optimism). It was launched in 2020 by Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan, both formerly at Coinbase. The goal was to create a social network where users own their identity, data, and social graph. It also provides a platform where developers work, using the same open protocol without permissions.
It uses a hybrid on-chain/off-chain architecture. The on-chain handles identity creation (FIDs) and username registration via ENS and Fnames. The off-chain, a decentralized network of servers called Hubs, stores and syncs content like posts (“casts”), follows and reactions.
Farcaster has quickly grown, surpassing 500,000–650,000+ users. It has secured funding from major investors like a16z, Coinbase Ventures, and Multicoin Capital.
Its flagship client, Warpcast, offers a Twitter-style interface where users publish “casts,” and reply through Frames. There are also embedded mini-apps that enable actions like NFT mints, polls, games, or DAOs right within a post.
